A good watch!

What’s it about?

Uma Thurman plays Dr Emma Lloyd, a New York DJ-slash-agony aunt who's happily engaged to her dependable fiancé Richard (Colin Firth). However, when she advises one of her listeners to call off her wedding, the groom-to-be decides to give her a taste of her own medicine and agrees to let a hacker friend alter her marital details on the City Hall database! when Emma and Richard turn up to register their imminent nuptials, Emma discovers, to her horror that she's already married. Believing the detail to be a computer glitch, she sets out to find Patrick and put the record straight, but Patrick has other ideas.

                                         
2. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - watched at the cinema on 13th January 2012

An enjoyable intriguing watch but long film!

What's it about?

This English-language adaptation of the Swedish novel by Stieg Larsson follows a disgraced journalist, Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig), as he investigates the disappearance of a wealthy patriarch's niece from 40 years ago. He is aided by the pierced, tattooed, punk computer hacker named Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara). As they work together in the investigation, Blomkvist and Salander uncover immense corruption beyond anything they have ever imagined.


                                            
3. Along came Polly - watched on TV on 14th January 2012


Very easy to watch light comedy! 

What's it about?

Reuben Feffer thinks he's found the love of his life but on his honeymoon he discovers she is cheating on him with a scuba instructor. Reuben travels back home to get his life on track. On a night out with best pal, Sandy Lyle, Reuben discovers an old school friend, Polly Prince. Reuben feels a connection straight away, and tries constantly to get her to like him. But it's not going to be easy for Reuben, especially when he spends his days calculating risks, and when someone unexpected turns up.



4. 27 Dresses - watched on TV (sky plus) on 20th January 2012


A very funny enjoyable easy watch!

Whats it about?

Katherine Heigl stars as Jane, a perennial bridesmaid who has planned 27 of her friends' weddings over the years and has 27 hideous bridesmaids' dresses to show for it. Her own romantic hopes are tied up in her boss but that all goes horribly wrong when her flighty sister blows into town and sweeps him off his feet.

Before she knows what's hit her, Jane finds herself in the horrible position of having to plan her own dream wedding for her sister. Meanwhile, cynical wedding journalist Kevin insists on shadowing her every move while covering the wedding for a magazine.



5. The Bucket List - watched on TV (sky plus) on 21st January 2012


A mixture of laughter and sadness, good watch! 


Whats it about? 

Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman star as two terminally ill cancer patients who decide to break out of the hospital and live their last days to the fullest. Edward Cole (Nicholson) is a corporate billionaire who is currently sharing a hospital room with blue-collar mechanic Carter Chambers (Freeman). Though initially the pair seems to have nothing in common, conversation gradually reveals that both men have a long list of goals they wish to accomplish before they kick the bucket, and an unrealized desire to discover what kind of men they really are. But one can't accomplish such lofty objectives from the confines of a hospital bed, so now, in order to live their lives to the absolute fullest, Edward and Carter will have to make a break for it. With a checklist that includes playing the poker tables in Monte Carlo, consuming copious amounts of caviar, racing the fastest machines on four wheels, and much more, these two terminally ill men will do their best to fit a lifetime of experience into their last remaining days while forging an unlikely, but truly remarkable, friendship.

6. The Shawshank Redemption - watched on TV (sky plus) on 28th January 2012

WOW! Another long film which I didn't expect to enjoy but I thought it was brilliant! This film mixes humour, horror and drama. Disturbing in places and moving in others! I do like a film with a happy ending! 

What's it about?

Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is a young and successful banker whose life changes drastically when he is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and her lover. Set in the 1940's, the film shows how Andy, with the help of his friend Red (Morgan Freeman), the prison entrepreneur, turns out to be a most unconventional prisoner.



7. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - watched on TV (sky plus) on 3rd February 2012

Not a film with a happy ending and left me feeling very depressed but enjoyed it whilst it was on! One of those films where you couldn't work out where it was going! Compelling viewing!

What's it about?

On the day that Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, elderly Daisy Williams (nee Fuller) is on her deathbed in a New Orleans hospital. At her side is her adult daughter, Caroline. Daisy asks Caroline to read to her aloud the diary of Daisy's lifelong friend, Benjamin Button. Benjamin's diary recounts his entire extraordinary life, the primary unusual aspect of which was his aging backwards, being diagnosed with several aging diseases at birth and thus given little chance of survival, but who does survive and gets younger with time. Abandoned by his biological father, Thomas Button, after Benjamin's biological mother died in childbirth, Benjamin was raised by Queenie, a black woman and caregiver at a seniors home. Daisy's grandmother was a resident at that home, which is where she first met Benjamin. Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact throughout their lives...





8. A Beautiful Mind - watched on12 DVD on 16th March 2012










 This film lost me fairly early on and I never really got to grips with what was going on! I only preservered with it because friends had told me what a fantastic film it was! I wish I had used my own initiative and switched off instead of suffering until the end! 


What's it about?

Stars Russell Crowe as brilliant mathematician John Nash and Jennifer Connelly as his devoted wife. A film detailing the life of a brilliant academic who suffers from schizophrenia. This affliction slowly takes over his mind an his life crumbles apart around him. He abandons his students, alienates his colleagues and replaces his research with a fruitless and all-consuming obsession. Eventually he is taken into hospital where he is forced, with the help of electric-shock therapy and regular medication, to accept his condition and attempt to repair the shattered fragments of his life. He succeeds. the happy ending is that, as an old man and after years of struggle, he is awarded the Nobel Prize.








9. The Hangover - watched on DVD (extended version) on 6th May 2012


I Laughed throughout this film and there was lots of unexpected surprises along the way! I would definitely recommend as an easy to watch laugh out loud film! We watched the extended DVD version which included a lot of adult content which I assume wasn't in the regular version!

What's it about?

With their friend Doug (Justin Bartha) on the verge of getting married, friends Phil (Bradley Cooper), Alan (Zack Galifinakis), and Stu (Ed Helms) take him to Las Vegas for a stag party blow-out. Waking the next morning, the three have hazy memories and a trashed hotel suite ... and there's no sign of Doug, who's due to tie the knot in two days. Phil, Alan, and Stu have to reconstruct their evening and find thier friend: What did they do? Where did they go? And why is there a tiger and a baby in their hotel suite?




10.  No Strings Attached - watched on DVD on 25th May 2012


Overall, the film gets a thumbs up from me - it's a light-hearted, feel-good film that made me smile and giggle.

What's is about?

Occasionally in the 15 years since summer camp, Adam and Emma cross paths. When he discovers that an ex-girlfriend is living with his dad, he gets drunk, calls every woman in his phone contact list, and ends up passed out naked in Emmas living room. By this time, she's a medical resident in L.A. and he's works on a "Glee"-like TV series, hoping to be a writer. She guards her emotions (calling her father's funeral "a thing"), so after a quick shag in the morning before leaving for the hospital, she asks if he wants a no-strings-attached, sex-only relationship, without romance or complications.  Is it possible to have no strings attached sex?

14. Hot Tub Time Machine - watched on TV (sky plus) on 26th August 2012.

This is a silly plot, which somehow makes the whole thing funnier.  I enjoyed the film and laughed throughout it! Some very funny bits, rude bits and gruesome bits.  I was entertained by it and would say watch it if you want light entertainment.  

What's it about?

This film is about three friends on losing streaks: Adam, whose girlfriend dumped him, Nick, with a dead-end job and a cheating wife, and Lou, a suicidal alcoholic. To help Lou recover from car-exhaust poisoning, Adam and Nick, with Adam's nephew Jacob, go to a winter resort that was their old party place. It's now a dump, but the lads rally for a night of drinking in the hot tub. Somehow, the hot tub takes them back to 1986, on a fateful night for each of them. Maybe if they do everything the same way they did that night, they'll get back to the future so Jacob can be born. There are serious temptations to do things differently. Will they make it back to their sorry lives? And what about Jacob?

What's it about?

Fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon is just experiencing the pangs of first love when she's viciously murdered by her neighbor Mr. Harvey. As her family slowly begins drifting apart while struggling to make sense of their loss, Susie bravely attempts to find her footing in the hereafter. Meanwhile, down on earth, Mr. Harvey is feeling confident that he's covered his tracks well enough to get away with the crime, and begins honing in on his next victim -- Susie's younger sister, Lindsey , who's beginning to suspect that he's not the harmless neighbour he portrays himself to be.

16. Manhunter - watched on TV (sky plus)  on 1st September 2012

What's it about?

Will Graham is a former FBI agent who recently retired to Florida with his wife Molly and their young son. Graham was a 'profiler'; one who profiles criminal's behavior and tries to put his mind into the minds of criminals to examine their thoughts while visiting crime scenes. Will is called out of his self-imposed retirement at the request of his former boss Jack Crawford to help the FBI catch an elusive serial killer, known to the press as the 'Tooth Fairy', who randomly kills whole families in their houses during nights of the full moon and leaves bite marks on his victims. To try to search for clues to get into the mind of the killer, Will has occasional meetings with Dr. Hannibal Lecktor, a charismatic but very dangerous imprisoned serial killer that Will captured years earlier which nearly drove him insane from the horrific encounter that nearly cost Will's life.
